Drawing a Duotone Portrait with Craig Nelson

With tissue and fingertips, Craig diffuses blocks of color to avoid locking in detail too early in the drawing. With his value in place, Craig finishes the drawing with dark charcoal lines and deliberate strokes. He carves out the well worn character of his subject's face and lifts out highlights with a kneaded eraser. Throughout the workshop, Craig Nelson emphasizes restraint, "under doing" each step until he finds the right moment to bring his subject into focus. As he adds last details to the nose and chin, you'll see this logical, intuitive process come to fruition.Craig Nelson is the director of Fine Art, Drawing and Painting at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. He has taught for over 30 years.

Gnomon - Drawing the Figure: Volume One

gestural,
structural, and anatomical; the first being the focus of this particular
demonstration. Gesture drawing establishes the unique storytelling and
emotional properties of a given pose. It can also be used to map out the
essential idea conveyed in the pose. Jack explores rapid-sketch
technique, weight distribution, and the rhythm of the body parts as they
adjust to the effects of gravity. Key concepts such as "contrapposto",
twist, overlapping shapes, and foreshortening are also covered. In
short, this lecture will show you how to create a dynamic, lively
interpretation of the subject being observed.

About Gnomon Workshop Welcome to The Gnomon Workshop, the industry leader in professional training for artists in the entertainment and design industries. Instructor: Steve Firchow Steve Firchow is a 2D and 3D artist with fifteen years of experience in commercial illustration and comic book coloring and five years in console game development. He has collaborated with many premiere artists in the comic industry and has created traditional and digital illustrations for Image Comics, Darkhorse Comics, Mattel, Sega, TSR, Wizards of the Coast, Ace Books and many other advertising and publishing agencies. While continuing as a freelance illustrator he began working full-time in game development in 2002. He worked on Call of Duty: Finest Hour doing mainly texturing and storyboards and is currently the art director on Spark Unlimited's first person shooter, Legendary.
